Windfarms and property values

Danish exception, or deception?

Roughly? Value halved!

English adaptation of Ray Clid's cartoon

Back in 2008, the Danish Parliament passed a law recognising the right of windfarm neighbours to be compensated for the loss of value of their homes. But there is a large gap between theory and practice. We learned today that, of the more than 1,000 applications submitted, only 551 were entertained. And of these, many resulted in payments "far below" the actual amount lost:

"An evaluation of the 551 compensation payments made to people living next to wind turbines indicates that the average amount was 57,000 kroner* per household. Estate agents say the amount is often far below the actual property value loss, which in some cases is up to 20 percent**."

* DKK 57,000 = € 7,640

** reports from other countries point to higher losses, all the way up to not finding a buyer at half the price. In those cases, some people prefer to abandon their homes, hoping that the windfarm will break down beyond repair after 15 years, which many seem to be doing.

The Danish exception applies to more than just property values. For example, we are asked to believe that birds are smarter in Denmark than in other countries. Indeed, none are reported to have been killed by wind turbines in the little kingdom. This is even less than in the UK and France, which have the next best bird mortality cover-up in the world. In contrast, the cover up has been lifted in Spain: SEO/Birdlife reported in January that the country's 18,000 wind turbines were killing between 6 and 18 million birds and bats yearly:

The Danish deception, which also applies to health matters (see Windfarm scandal in Denmark) brings to mind the wise words of Howard Hayden, Professor of Physics Emeritus at the University of Connecticut: "In recent years, the little country Denmark has gained a certain amount of fame with its wind turbines. No, they don´t get much electricity from them. They sell them to suckers."
